One of the hot topics in the Australian theatre scene at the moment is whether contemporary theatre is pushing the boundaries too far in terms of audience acceptability with graphic scenes involving nudity, violence and sex?

I realise many readers of The Drama Teacher may not necessarily agree with my views, but listen below for an interview I did in the last few days with Sydney radio station 2SER on this issue, as part of The Fourth Estate, a national media and communications program.

I really wanted to stress the point in this interview that due to the nature of contemporary theatre, it is becoming increasingly complex for drama teachers to book a suitable theatre show for our students in advance. But unfortunately I didn’t get the opportunity.

Now here’s a great video podcast from The American Theatre Wing, the same organisation that brings us the annual Tony Awards on Broadway.

“The Marketing of Broadway” has a panel of industry guests discussing what is involved in marketing, publicising and advertising a Broadway show; how they work one-on-one with producers and creative teams; the marketing obstacles they face; who their target audience is; how they handle a show that isn’t a hit, or that they don’t like; the Internet’s influence on sales; whether or not a known title helps sell a show; how to sustain the buzz after a show opens; and whether “Broadway” can be sold as a brand.

I’ve watched it and I can highly recommend this podcast. Very educational.

West Side Story The New Broadway Cast Recording

The 2009 Broadway production of West Side Story, the first revival in New York of this musical since 1980, is already a huge success.

Goofing around for theatre podcasts on iTunes, I stumbled across a great podcast about this show from Masterworks Broadway Podcast Theatre. Interviewed on this podcast is everyone from the 2009 leads to Stephen Sondheim, himself.

Well worth a listen.

I was thinking of posting links to theatre-related podcasts on The Drama Teacher on a regular basis. Are people interested? Add a comment to this post below if you are.
