Sydney Theatre’s Uncle Vanya Lands In New York

The acclaimed Sydney Theatre Company production of Chekhov’s Uncle Vanya (2010) has opened in New York as part of the Lincoln Center Festival.

This is the show that stars co-artistic director of the STC, Cate Blanchett, in the role of Yelena and has in tow the entire original Australian cast including Hugo Weaving, Richard Roxburgh, Jacki Weaver and John Bell.

This is also the show that played at Washington’s Kennedy Center last year to rapturous applause, where New York times Chief Theatre Critic, Ben Brantley said

I consider the three hours I spent on Saturday night … among the happiest of my theatergoing life

High praise, indeed! The current Lincoln Center production will close July 28 and is considered the Festival highlight.

Today’s New York Times has published an intimate chat with Cate Blanchett and her Sydney Theatre Company co-artistic director and playwright husband, Andrew Upton. Definitely worth a read.
