I have seen Yasmina Reza’s ‘Art’ few years ago. A nice piece of contemporary drawing-room comedy, that’s all. Nice. I didn’t know at the time that it was a multi award winning play (including a Sir Lawrence and a Tony!)

So when I heard that ‘God of Carnage’ was about to hit town after super successful seasons on Broadway and the West End (and another swag of awards), I was interested to see just what all the fuss is about, not to mention that Hugo Weaving was in the cast and I haven’t seen him on stage …

So there I was, sitting up there, expecting the next best thing … the play that will change the way I think about life, relationships, the human condition. But I soon realised, oh no, I was watching the wrong play! I’ve made a mistake! I must have been in the wrong theatre. This is not that new show from Broadway, no, it’s the French translation of “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?” There are the two couples … the booze … the arguments that turn from civilized to anarchic … there are the secrets that are dramatically revealed about the couples … their marriage, children … but hang on … isn’t that Hugo Weaving? Yes … that must be him … this IS the hot new thing blazing it’s way through Europe and the US! Ok, can’t get distracted, Hugo Weaving’s face-lift is really fascinating me … concentrate you might miss a bit of witty dialogue … no on second thought the woman in front of me can see the jokes coming a mile off, she must have seen this play before too … I personally liked the old version better, that Martha was hellova lotta fun!
